Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) is the main law enforcement agency for the city. They handle arrests, traffic stops, and investigations across the consolidated city-county area. The department merged city police and county sheriff patrol functions in 2007.

IMPD Headquarters is at 50 N Alabama Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204. The non-emergency line is 317-327-3811. For records requests specifically, call 317-327-3155. Officers are on patrol around the clock, and arrests happen every day of the year.

The Indianapolis metro area runs on a unified-government model. Most arrests in Marion County go through IMPD unless the crime falls under federal jurisdiction or a special task force.

The city's official portal at indy.gov is your starting point for many services, including records requests and department contacts. You can reach records staff by phone during normal business hours, Monday through Friday.

Marion County Jail and Inmate Search

Most people arrested in Indianapolis are booked into the Marion County Jail at 40 S Alabama Street, just steps from the courthouse. The jail is operated by the Marion County Sheriff's Office. A second facility, the Marion County Arrestee Processing Center, handles initial intake before transfer.

To look up a current inmate, use the free online tool at inmateinfo.indy.gov/IML. This system shows who is currently held, their booking date, and in many cases their bond information. Results are updated throughout the day.

You can also search through the Marion County Sheriff's Office jail portal at jail.marionso.com. Both systems pull from the same data but display it slightly differently. If you do not find someone on one, try the other.

For detailed county-level records and court information, see the Marion County recent arrests page.

Indiana Courts MyCase Public Search

Once a person is charged and a case is filed, that record becomes available through Indiana's statewide court portal. MyCase is free to use and covers all Indiana counties, including Marion.

You can search by name, case number, or attorney at public.courts.in.gov/mycase. Results show charges filed, hearing dates, judge assignments, and case outcomes. Criminal cases in Marion County are often filed within 48 to 72 hours of arrest.

The MyCase portal above covers all criminal, civil, and traffic cases filed in Indiana courts. Marion County cases load quickly because the system is updated in real time.

MyCase does not show sealed records or juvenile cases. Most adult criminal cases are visible from the date of first filing forward.

What Indianapolis Arrest Records Contain

Arrest records are public under Indiana Code 5-14-3-5. The law says law enforcement agencies must give you certain information about people in custody. That includes the person's name, the offense charged, the date of arrest, and the name of the arresting officer.

Records do not always include a photo or bond amount right away. Those details often come within hours of booking. If you need the most current info, the online inmate search tools update faster than any printed report.

The record does not prove guilt. An arrest means someone was taken into custody. Charges may be reduced, dropped, or result in acquittal. Keep that in mind when reviewing any arrest record.

ISP Limited Criminal History Search

The Indiana State Police maintains a statewide criminal history database. You can search it at in.gov/ai/appfiles/isp-lch2. This is the Limited Criminal History (LCH) search tool and it is available to the public.

The LCH search shows arrests, charges, and dispositions that Indiana courts have reported to the state. It is not real-time. There can be a lag of days or weeks between an arrest and when it appears in the LCH system.

Use it to check prior criminal history, not just current arrests. For active bookings, the jail roster is a better source.

VINE Custody Notifications

VINE stands for Victim Information and Notification Everyday. It is a free service that lets you sign up to get alerts when an inmate's custody status changes. You can register online at vinelink.com or call 1-866-959-VINE anytime.

VINE covers Marion County Jail and other facilities where Indianapolis arrestees may be held. You pick the person you want to monitor, enter your contact info, and the system calls, texts, or emails you when they are released, transferred, or escape.

This service is mostly used by victims and witnesses, but anyone can sign up. There is no fee. The system runs around the clock.

Public Records Requests Under Indiana APRA

Indiana's Access to Public Records Act (APRA) is codified at IC 5-14-3-3. It gives the public the right to inspect and copy records held by government agencies, including police departments, sheriff offices, and courts.

To request records from IMPD or the Marion County Sheriff, submit a written request by email, mail, or in person. State what you want as clearly as possible. The agency has seven days to respond. They can ask for more time in complex cases but must notify you within that window.

Some records are exempt. Active investigations, juvenile records, and some personnel files cannot be released. The agency must tell you why if they deny a request. You can appeal a denial to the Indiana Public Access Counselor at no cost.

IDOC Offender Locator

If someone was sentenced and sent to an Indiana Department of Correction facility, use the IDOC Offender Locator at offenderlocator.idoc.in.gov. This tool shows current facility, projected release date, and offense history for anyone in state prison.

People arrested in Indianapolis who receive a jail sentence typically serve time in Marion County Jail. Those with longer sentences are transferred to an IDOC facility. Both tools may be needed depending on when and how long ago the arrest occurred.

Nearby Cities
